The Extreme Benefits of Being Balanced

EliotBurdett | July 15th, 2010 - 05:45

Work, play, love, rest, exercise, dream and sleep. Most of us get a lot of one or two of these, but few of us get enough of all of these. For many, work time crowds out almost all of the other things on this list.

So what? Does balance really matter? We can all sleep when we die right? Maybe.

Are Our Kids Vegan?

EliotBurdett | July 9th, 2010 - 04:51

This is a question I get a lot. Are my kids vegan. The answer is simple, but first let me explain my own choice.

I became a vegan primarily for health reasons. I researched the benefits and risks of both traditional and vegan diets and I sorted through all the piles of conflicting science, advice and food religion. In the end, nothing was (or is) conclusive and I had to place a bet on what was right for me.

Every party eventually ends and every toothache passes. Make sure to take in each and every moment of your life as it is all very brief. Don’t hold on to any moment to tightly or you may miss the next one.

2000 Days of Vegetarianism and Who Needs Meat Anyway?

EliotBurdett | June 24th, 2010 - 04:18

When I decided to try vegetarianism exactly 2,000 days ago today, it was an experiment to see how I would feel by eliminating from my diet the toxins in most of the meat I was eating at the time.

When I felt great without meat in my diet, I decided to extend my experiment indefinitely. Now 5.5 years later, being a vegetarian has become a way of life for me and there is no looking back. To continue reading this post, click here >> [...]

The Simple Things

“When we recall the past, we usually find that it is the simplest things—not the great occasions—that in retrospect give off the greatest glow of happiness.” ~ Bob Hope

No Time Like the Present

EliotBurdett | June 23rd, 2010 - 06:16

Action leads to results. A lot of us, myself included are guilty of spending too much time trying to perfect ideas, when we should just get going. Whether it is business, or personal goals, often it is simply better to get going and perfect your approach on the fly. Popular entrepreneur and investor, Guy Kawasaki, has has a saying “don’t worry, be crappy” which distills the theory that it is better to be in a game and learning and learning how to play well, than trying to learn about how to play a game from the sidelines. Napolean Hill also underscored the importance of action “Create a definite plan for carrying out your desire, and begin at once, whether you’re ready or not, to put it into action.”

Meditating Won’t Pedal Your Bicycle

EliotBurdett | June 22nd, 2010 - 05:34

When life or business becomes overwhelming or when dreams seem unreachable, a lot of people turn to meditation as a way to take themselves someplace else. When this doesn’t happen, they are often disappointed, give up and miss what meditation is really all about.

You are the Master of Your Fate

EliotBurdett | June 21st, 2010 - 08:38

I watched Invictus this weekend. Great movie and worth seeing if you get a chance. The movie tells the story of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and successful rise as South Africa’s President. The name of the movie comes from a poem by William Ernest Henley that Mandela kept with him while in prison.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gait,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Hard to imagine anyone spending 25 years in prison and then being as positive, forgiving and productive as he was. We draw inspiration from him and he drew inspiration from this poem. He truly is the master of his fate
