The Science and Benefits of Meditation

Read a great article in the New York Times this morning about the scientific benefits of meditation. I can tell you from personal experience meditating every single morning for nearly 19 months now that meditating will bring calmness, clarity and energy to your life. Now it looks like there is scientific evidence that meditation is good for you using MRI brain scans of people who meditate. The Times article cites a new study in the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroimaging.

Most interesting is this tidbit:

M.R.I. brain scans taken before and after the participants’ meditation regimen found increased gray matter in the hippocampus, an area important for learning and memory. The images also showed a reduction of gray matter in the amygdala, a region connected to anxiety and stress. A control group that did not practice meditation showed no such changes.

HT to my good friend and avid NYT reader, Sean for pointing me to this article.
